Horse Sense

A different kind of support. On the ground, with a horse.

Some youngsters are carrying a lot.

The anxiety that spikes before school. The restlessness that won’t settle. The big feelings that arrive without warning and leave everyone exhausted. The sense of being out of step — with classmates, with the classroom, with their own body.

Talking about it doesn’t always help. Sometimes the body needs to learn first.

That’s where the horse comes in.

Horse Sense program for youngsters

Horse Sense is a one-to-one somatic learning experience for young people aged 8 to 18, facilitated on the ground with a horse at our Noordhoek venue.

No riding. No horse experience needed. No performance required.

In a Horse Sense session, your child works quietly alongside a horse — observing, breathing, moving, connecting. The horse responds not to what your child says, but to how they are: their breath, their body, their nervous system state. That real-time, honest feedback is something no classroom or therapy room can replicate.

Over time, young people learn to notice what’s happening in their own bodies — and to regulate it. Not through willpower but through experience.

Horses are prey animals. Their survival depends on reading the emotional and physical state of those around them — accurately, instantly, without judgment. They respond to tension. They relax into calm. They reflect congruence.

When a child approaches a horse holding their breath, the horse notices. When that same child exhales, softens, and arrives — the horse shifts too. That exchange is visible, immediate, and deeply affirming for a young person who has spent years being told to just calm down.

Research shows that interaction with horses can help children and teenagers:

  • Regulate their nervous system in real time
  • Improve focus and the ability to stay present
  • Reduce anxiety and stress hormone levels
  • Build confidence through authentic, non-verbal communication
  • Develop body awareness and emotional self-regulation skills

Horse Sense is particularly well-suited for young people experiencing anxiety, ADHD, or emotional dysregulation — as well as those who simply feel more at home with animals than with people – or who learn better through body and experience than through words.

Horse Sense is a somatic learning experience, not a therapeutic or clinical service. It does not replace assessment or treatment by a registered health professional.

Step one:
We begin with a standalone session.
This is a chance for your child to meet the horse and the space, and for us to see whether Horse Sense is the right fit.
There is no pressure to continue.

Step two:
If the first session feels right, your child books further sessions in sets of four.
Consistency matters — the nervous system learns through repetition, and the relationship with the horse deepens over time.

Each session is tailored to your child’s age, temperament, and where they are on the day. There is no fixed programme — the horse and child set the pace.

A session might include:

  • Quiet time in the presence of the horse — simply being together
  • Grooming or gentle touch, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system
  • Groundwork activities that invite focus, breath, and body awareness
  • Reflection on what the child noticed — in themselves and in the horse

Sessions run 45 minutes – for children aged 8–12.
60 minutes for teenagers aged 13–18.

Your child does not need to be brave, talkative, or ready. They just need to arrive.

Horse Sense is facilitated by Sam Huckle, founder of Medicine Horse — a somatic practitioner, life coach, and counsellor with forty years of lived experience with horses and ten years of professional equine-facilitated practice.

Sam’s work draws on training in NVC (Nonviolent Communication), somatic and embodied approaches, Family Constellations, and multiple coaching modalities. She is neurodivergent herself, and brings particular understanding to young people who feel everything and don’t fit the expectations placed on them.

Sam does not work from a clinical model. She works from presence, deep knowledge of horses, and genuine respect for what each young person brings.

Choosing something for your child is different from choosing something for yourself. You want to know it’s safe. You want to know it’s credible. And you want to know that the person holding the space truly sees your child.

Horse Sense is ground-based — your child will not be riding. The horses at our Noordhoek venue are calm, established, and selected for this work. Sam holds the safety of both child and horse as non-negotiable.

If you have questions before booking, a brief call with Sam is always available. She would rather answer your questions than have you book with uncertainty.
