Sam’s Story

My best friend when I was thirteen was a horse.

She was very smart, sensitive and fiery, and at an age when belonging felt uncertain, she was the one constant that made sense to me.

That was the beginning of a deep understanding of what horses offer that most humans find difficult: Horses meet you exactly where you are, without agenda, without judgement, and without the need to fix or change what they find.

I met my kindred spirit in a gelding I shared fifteen years of my life with — through a mutual experience of depression. He was a deeply emotional being who had just gone through a huge life change when we met. A horse without friends, without herd – like a person without family or community – can find life meaningless and really hard. We needed and supported each other.

Over the decades horses have continued to be my most honest friends and teachers. And my current horses continue to teach me daily: how to be present when my mind wants to scatter; how to be curious when I feel defensive; how to be kind to myself when the critical voice inside gets loud. And how to be courageous enough to keep turning toward what is true and real and authentic for me.

Medicine Horse grew out of all of this. Never as a business idea, but from a lived reality and understanding: that what horses have given me — clarity, presence, authentic connection, and the experience of being seen and accepted — is of great value, to all people, or all ages.

I created Medicine Horse because I believe that Embodied, Emotional, Relational, and Ancestral Intelligence are the missing curriculum of our times. These intelligences are hugely important – and they are learnable – and the wise, present, and powerful horses, are the best teachers that I know of.

I hope that you will join us in the field.
