Family Constellations with Horses

Some of what we struggle with did not begin with us

The anxiety that has no obvious source. The relationship patterns that repeat despite our best intentions. The grief that feels too large for one lifetime. The loyalty to a family system that quietly costs us our own freedom.

Family Constellations work reveals the hidden dynamics of the family system — the entanglements, the unresolved losses, the interrupted bonds — and creates the conditions for them to move toward resolution.

What is Family Constellations?

Developed by Bert Hellinger and evolved significantly by subsequent practitioners, Family Constellations is a therapeutic modality that works with the systemic field of the family — the invisible web of loyalties, exclusions, traumas, and unresolved dynamics that are passed down through generations.

The work operates on a simple and profound principle: what was not resolved in previous generations does not disappear. It is carried — often unconsciously — by those who come after. Children and grandchildren may live out the unfinished business of ancestors they never knew, without being aware of this or understanding why.

A constellation brings these dynamics into visible form — and opens the possibility of resolution, release, and a return to right order within the system.

Family Constellations with horses — what makes this different

In a traditional group constellation, human representatives stand in for members of the family system. At Medicine Horse, the horses take that role.

Horses are naturally tuned into the morphogenic or Knowing Field — the invisible informational field of a family system. They respond to what is present in that field with honesty and precision, moving, turning, approaching, or withdrawing in ways that reveal the hidden dynamics of the system without any direction or choreography.

They do not analyse. They do not perform. They simply respond.

Working with horses as representatives creates a constellation experience that is more somatic, more immediate, and more embodied than traditional group work. The movements and responses of the horses become the language through which the family system speaks — and through which resolution becomes possible.

A session looks like this

Sessions are held in person at the Medicine Horse yard in Cape Town, in an arena where the horses move freely and at liberty throughout.

You will work 1:1 with Sam, with the horses, and carefully chosen objects as representatives for members of your family system or other relevant elements of your constellation.

Sam facilitates the process with care, experience, and deep attunement to both you and the horses — reading the field, naming what she observes, and guiding the constellation toward resolution at its own pace.

A session runs approximately two hours.

Family Constellations is powerful work. Constellations continue to unfold and integrate for weeks and sometimes months after the session itself. For this reason, sessions are typically offered no more frequently than once every three months — allowing the work the time and space it needs to complete.

Session details

Family Constellations may also be offered without horses in certain circumstances. Please enquire if you are not based in Cape Town or if in-person attendance is not possible.

What you might bring to a constellation

  • Recurring patterns in relationships or life circumstances that resist change
  • A sense of carrying something that doesn’t feel entirely your own
  • Unresolved grief, loss, or trauma — your own or your family’s
  • Questions about belonging, identity, or your place within your family system
  • Difficult dynamics with parents, siblings, or children
  • A sense that something in your lineage needs acknowledgement or resolution

You do not need to know exactly what you are looking for. Sometimes the most important thing a constellation reveals is the question you didn’t know to ask.

Not sure if this is what you need?
